Bernard has chalked up its 75th anniversary, developing from a small family-owned business on the southeast of Chicago into a major corporation.

Over the course of its 75 years in business, research and development efforts have led to multiple technologies, including perfecting the Dual Shield welding process in 1954 - now known as flux-cored arc welding (FCAW).

During the 1960s, the company introduced its Bernard MIG welding gun and wire feeder, which served as the basis for continued gun and consumable innovation. In 1970, it was bought by Dover Corporation, and in 2001, Illinois Tool Works (ITW) bought the company, which is currently a division of Miller Electric Mfg in Appleton, Wisconsin, which is wholly owned by Miller.

Nathan Miller, Vice President and General Manager at Bernard, said, ”Bernard was built upon a strong engineering foundation, which remains prominent in our culture today. As the welding industry has evolved, Bernard has evolved with it and continue to build upon the history of innovative solutions designed to meet the needs of the global welding industry.”

Today Bernard offers its customisable BTB semi-automatic air-cooled MIG guns and other MIG gun lines that can be configured online to meet customers’ needs.

Operators can customise them with multiple handle, trigger and liner options, along with fixed or rotatable neck and choice of consumables.

AccuLock S consumables, introduced in 2019, and recently promoted at FABTECH in Atlanta, addresses liner trim length errors and erratic wire feeding, leading to less troubleshooting, downtime and rework.

Engineering Manager Greg Bauer said, “When I started here we didn’t have computers - and now we have the abilty to model something, print it out, put it on a product and give it to a customer and have them give us feedback and very easily tweak or change those designs.”

Miller said, “We’ve come a long way but there’s always more for us to do. We have opportunities to evolve our technology, and better understand our customers.”
